Province Administration Literature Series (省政文藝叢書) is a collection of works compiled by News Bureau of Taiwan Province (臺灣省政府 新聞處). Local writers were invited to compose literature to propagate the achievements of provincial public constructions since 1965. Most of the pieces are fiction, interspersed with some prose, modern poetry, and even radio plays. The variety of the works reached a total number of 74 kinds when the series was discontinued in 1980. These works demonstrate the specificity of Taiwanese Literature in the 60s. While the series mainly uses Taiwan as a backdrop, most of the writers were from the mainland. Because of this specificity, this series records descriptions of Taiwan through an outlander's perspective. These Taiwan experiences are a mixture of the writers' diasporic experiences, discussions of homeland, expectations of returning home, and efforts of settling in Taiwan. Taiwan in these works is not only a foreign ”space,” but a ”place” with complex connotations. This paper examines this literature series, and analyzes the experience of space and the sense of place concerning Taiwan in these works. The conclusion explains how the contents of these works, works produced in this special context with propaganda purpose, become vehicles of history and culture pertaining to the uniqueness of this era.
