The purpose of this study was to develop a standardized test to assess the abilities to respond to wh-questions for preschool children. Three hundred and seventy-one children aged 3 to 5 participated in the study. The main results of the study are listed as follows. First, Test of Wh-Question Response (TWQR) was characterized with excellent internal consistency, retest reliability, inter-rater reliability, and intra-rater reliability. Second, the participants' scores on TWQR correlated well with scores on Word Expression Subtest (Tseng, 1996) of the General Test Battery of Children's Cognitive Abilities (Wu et al., 1997). Third, the scores on TWQR increased with age as expected. Fourth, there was a significant interaction effect between kinds of questions and presence of referent pictures. Finally, children with language delays performed less well than typically developing children on TWQR. In addition, we offered cutoff points for screening out children with language delays for three age groups.
