This present paper, based on the standpoint of generative grammar and focusing on the Japanese focus particle sae, aims to propose the syntactic structure of sentences containing sae as well as the mechanism of computational system that generates such a structure.First of all, I present a well-known generalization that only the clause-mate constituent of sae can be its focus. Then, assuming [+f] feature as a determinative element of the focus, I propose an analysis that phonetic strings and the sentence structure of a sentence containing sae could be obtained after PF movement of sae and LF movement of a constituent. In addition, I point out a theoretical deficiency in a preceding study of Aoyagi (2006) and add an explanation that there would not arise such a problem in my proposal. Lastly, in answer to what ”interpreted as a focus” theoretically means, I propose mapping rules and the function of sae from LF to SR (Semantic Representation) and finally I argue that SR of a sentence containing sae (X sae P) should consist of ”an assertion of P(X)”, ”a presupposition that P(X) is deleted” and ”a presupposition of P(x), where x is a free variable”.
