|This paper demonstrates how the fishbowl-style discussion training targeting L1 and L2 speakers of Japanese enhances the participants' discussion skills.Focusing on three groups, the study examines reflection notes written by the participants as well as recorded interactions of all groups' first and second discussions and post-discussion reflection sessions. The analysis shows that, through the group reflection on the first discussion, the participants' awareness of their problems triggers changes of their linguistic behaviors in the second discussion.More specifically, they modify their behaviors to improve discussion management, equality of participation, diversity of opinions and depth of discussion.Based on these findings, the study concludes that the fishbowl-style training is an effective method to increase the participants' discussion skills for L1 and L2 speakers of Japanese.
