The Stroh theory of elastically anisotropic media is reviewed and discussed with respect to invariances and other intrinsic characteristics that can be used for plots of elastic properties as function of direction in the medium. It is found that 5 invariants with respect to rotation about the direction considered and one intrinsic transverse direction embedded in the medium and thus connected with its actual angular orientation, are needed. Elastic axes manifesting themselves as singularities in the suggested plots are also discussed.
