"Patients as educators" is a focus of medical education. Patients' selfie videos about coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can be used in narrative medical teaching to implement this concept. In this study, we invited medical interns to practice narrative medicine and evaluate the effectiveness of this new practice. Medical interns from the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine at a medical center in Taiwan participated in four teaching sessions guided by an attending physician. Students were asked to download and watch selfie videos of two patients with COVID-19 from the United States, Italy, or Spain. Each student then wrote a 600- to 800-word essay describing the course of the patients' illnesses, and the essays were reviewed by the attending physician. Students completed questionnaires before and after the study. We then conducted quantitative and qualitative analyses of the questionnaires to understand the learning effectiveness. Quantitative questionnaire analysis of four of the seven questions indicated improvement in the interns' perception of the patient's condition (p < 0.05). Moreover, the students felt more empathetic toward the patients and acknowledged the severity of COVID-19. To sum up, the use of selfie videos of patients with COVID-19 for narrative medicine teaching can achieve the concept of "patients as educators." |
