The purpose of this study was to explore the visual images that Taiwanese children created as representations of their mental images and ideas. Many Taiwanese parents enroll their children in private early childhood programs that offer art lessons. Other parents let their children take art lessons in after school programs. I wanted to explore Taiwanese children's artistic intelligence via an artistically improvisational activity. The study was an empirical investigation that used qualitative research methodology to analyze the artistic products of Taiwanese children. The participants, 150 kindergarten through fifth grade students from three different elementary schools located in the eastern region of Taipei, completed the artistically improvisational activity during their regularly scheduled art classes. The children created products in their classrooms. They demonstrated their artistic ability by constructing structures made with colored, geometric-shaped pieces. I analyzed and interpreted the children's products to identify the works' distinguishing characteristics. Then, I classified the salient characteristics into five categories: complexity, space, color, harmony, and creativity. The paper also provides suggestions for practical applications and ways to improve the activity for further research.
