Social work is the first profession to advocate the importance of relationships. Professional relationships are key elements of social work practices. However, discussions on such professional relationships remain limited in Taiwan. This study examined social workers' experiences working with abused women and sought to deepen our understanding of dynamic interactions between workers and clients during daily work. Qualitative methods were used in this study. Based on data collected from focus group interviews and the use of the nominal group technique, a profile of the "social distance mode" became apparent. The nature of such relationships could be affected by factors such as women's and social workers' personal characteristics, concerns about safety, lack of confidence and competence, and insufficient interaction with clients. Training for social workers focusing on the relationship-based practices is highly recommended.
