The pur pose ofthis study was to examine the risk fac tors asso ci ated with pre-term labor (PTL) (<37 ges ta tional weeks) and low birth weight (LBW) (<2500gm) infants in a healthy Tai wan ese pop ulation. From Decem ber 1998 through June 1999, a total of 633 healthy preg nant women were recruited at three teaching hospitals in Tai pci. Using a prospective study design, the preg nancy out comeinfor mation was followed up by tele phone or from med i cal records during the first month postpartum. Data were statistically analyzed by multiple logis tic regres sion. The prevalence ofpre mature births was 5.4%, and the prevalence ofLBW infants was 5.1%. Pre-term births were significantly asso cia ted with high self-reported fatigue scores (OR=3.45); extreme mater nal age (<20 and ≥35 years, OR=2.38); his tory ofabortion (≥2, OR=3.11); mater nal height (≤158cm, OR=1.73); low income (OR=1.88), and mul ti plc preg nan cies (OR=18.78). The risk for low birth weight infants was sig nifi cantly increased when the woman had an extreme mater nal age (OR=2.65), nulliparity (OR=1.64); multiple preg nan cies (OR=9.3) and no domes tic helper (OR=1.65). The study pro vides a refer ence basis for pre natal care. |
