Background: There has been a steady rise in the number of papers and articles by family medicine researchers worldwide, including those in Taiwan. Studies examining the current status of publication of papers by family medicine researchers in Taiwan remains limited. This study analyzed the latest current state of papers and articles contributed by Taiwanese family medicine researchers and published in international journals based on an international scientific database index. Methods: A survey of the records from the Web of Science® was conducted on January 15, 2016, documenting articles and papers authored by Taiwanese researchers in the field of family medicine and published in international journals in 2015. The journals publishing the papers, the subject categories and impact factors of the published papers, and the professional/academic affiliations of the authors were analyzed. Results: A total of 279 articles were authored in 2015 by family medicine researchers in Taiwan, who appeared as the first authors in 76 articles (27.2%), the corresponding authors in 71% articles (25.4%), either the first or the corresponding authors in 112 articles (40.1%), and as both the first and the corresponding authors in 35 articles (12.5%). All of the articles were published in 180 journals and covered 67 subject categories. Approximately one-third of the articles were published in journals of general and internal medicine, multidisciplinary sciences and geriatrics/gerontology. Only one article was published in a journal about primary health care. Conclusion: Interdisciplinary collaboration is very common for family medicine researchers in Taiwan. Only a few articles are published in the field of primary health care. More efforts are needed to invest to expedite ongoing improvement in both the quality and quantity of family medicine research in Taiwan. Passing the research experiences to next-generation family medicine researchers is also of crucial importance.
