In the light of complex social networks, this paper tackle with the huge impact brought upon the psychology of patients, folk culture, economy and construction for modernization in outlying island after the black dog port was inflicted with filariasis in the novel Boss Noballs. By way of analysis it points out that the novelist Wang Xiangqi has obviously taken not only the outlying island outside Taiwan as a district easily inflicted with disease but also the disease as the best approach to discriminating the connotation of modernity of Taiwan and its contradiction. What is of significant import in reflecting modernity is his argument that we should heal the marginal group and reflecting upon ourselves and pay attention to the latent conflict to which the modern medicine may lead. After thorough elaboration of the characteristics of comic technique, disease narration and the unique comedy structure of this novel, this paper attempt to demonstrate how the ironic narrative form acting as an important device of destroying the old culture and heralding the new culture has engaged in the total cultural construction of Taiwan from 50's to 80's in 20th century, how the inevitable contradiction of modernity is highlighted by utilizing the mirroring function of the custom intrinsic in the comic contradiction and an alternative face of modernity is featured by way of the metaphor of disease writing. |
