This research focuses on the acquisition process of similar-shape and differing-shape Japanese kanji vocabulary by examining a case study of a Taiwanese learner studying in Japan (Ms. D), examining provisional usage throughout the acquisition process of Japanese kanji vocabulary. Acquisition is examined in terms of usage of Japanese kanji vocabulary, phrases, and L1 or L2 language knowledge of learners. To investigate how the learner uses her first language knowledge (i.e. Chinese characters and vocabulary) to learn a second language (i.e. Japanese kanji and vocabulary), usage of Japanese kanji vocabulary is investigated through sentence speaking tasks for new vocabulary and introspective reports. In the introspective reports, the learner self-recorded specific use of Chinese knowledge or Japanese language knowledge during using sentence speaking tasks. The investigation lasted for 10 months. The survey analysis found Japanese kanji vocabulary acquisition by the learner to be largely separated into four categories: no correct examples during usage process for difficult kanji vocabulary, degenerated kanji vocabulary during usage process, improved kanji vocabulary during usage process, and entirely correct examples during usage process for easy kanji vocabulary. Furthermore, the survey revealed that learner knowledge of Japanese kanji vocabulary is formed in stages, with gradually decreased dependence on first language knowledge. |
