蘭姆(Charles Lamb)之散文集《以籟雅隨筆》(Essays of Elia, 1823)與《以籟雅最後的隨筆》(Last Essays of Elia, 1833)中,作者藉以籟雅之筆名,鍾意以日常生活為題。

Published respectively in 1823 and 1833, Essays of Elia and Last Essays of Elia were written and made popular by Charles Lamb, a loveable English essay writer in the Romantic period. Under the pseudonym "Elia", Lamb wrote extensively about everyday life. Unlike his contemporary writers, Lamb did not write about imagination and hallucination under the influence of drug; instead, as he walked the streets of London, the nostalgia triggered by the passage of time served as the foundation of his reminiscence writings. The juxtaposition of time and space, in particular, formed the idiosyncrasy of narrative in his familiar essays. This article first looks into Lamb's correspondences with William Wordsworth and Thomas Manning as well as Lamb's own essay "The Londoner" to examine Lamb's "local attachment" to London. As an emerging metropolis, London was a locale that not only allowed busy commerce and socio-economic mobility to take place but also permitted Lamb's personal memories to forge a closer bond with the urban reading public. Essays such as "The South-Sea House" and "Old China" will be scrutinised to further explore how materiality and consumption in everyday life are presented, and how reminiscence and writing memories enable Lamb to negotiate a self-identity whose distinctive lyrical expression and aesthetics can be fully displayed in his highly autobiographical writings.
