Scholars have considered The Brownies Book a literary product of the Harlem Renaissance. However, we will analyze the editorial content of this short-lived children's magazine under the influence of the international situations and the substantial impacts from Black society, such as the disappointments of post-war peace settlements, the conscious conflicts between William Edward Burghardt Du Bois's Double Consciousness and Marcus Garvey's back-to-Africa. We will discuss how those factors reflect the changes in the content of The Brownies' Book and further its writing strategies: expounds on racial issues with diversification and deliberates African image, starting from Du Bois's article "Close Ranks," published in Crisis, and the concept of "the Veil" which he argues in The Souls of Black Folk. The Brownies' Book presents racial issues from the perspective of "the others"; configures racial conflicts with written texts instead of photography in order to protect the children while respecting their right to know; describes relevant racial issues with blurring boundaries and metaphoric narrations; uses vivid colors in the nature to confront black-skin obsession. The editors of The Brownies' Book also expose the concept of "the Veil" to interact with the African fairy tales, legends, and the authors' personal experiences in the context of African imagery. Therefore, it offers a modern meaning for Africa through virtual and concrete interoperability.
