The aim of this retrospective research is to study the influence of sedative premedication to propofol total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA). Seventy-seven clinically healthy, client-owned dogs were included in the study. Dogs were allotted to three groups: dogs without sedative premedication (PT), dogs with acepromazine 0.05 mg/kg IV (AT), and dogs with diazepam 0.3 mg/kg IV (DT). Dosage of propofol for anesthesia induction and maintenance, cardiovascular and ventilation condition during anesthesia, and recovery status were compared between groups. The results revealed that dogs in AT group, comparing to those in DT group, had lower mean heart rate and mean systolic arterial pressure during anesthesia, and took more time to be able to stand spontaneously, despite of less propofol dosage required for anesthesia induction. All measurement of DT group showed no significant differences to those of PT group. The study suggests that, unless chemical restraint is an issue, sedative premedications provide no clinical benefit to healthy dogs requiring propofol TIVA. |
