This project aimed to improve the completion rate of early postpartum skin-to-skin contact by adopting the SOFT approach. The project was launched in light of recent investigations, which had indicated that the completion rate of early postpartum skin-to-skin contact was only 62%. Factors analysis revealed the following issues: 1) nurses' cognition rate as low as 70%; 2) lack of early postpartum skin-to-skin contact SOP for nature delivery procedure; 3) lack of audit processes; and 4) air conditioning in the delivery room too cold and the maternity gown poorly designed. To resolve the issues, the following solutions were implemented: 1) education and advocacy; 2) a SOP based upon the SOFT approach; 3) audit processes; 4) electric heaters with improved maternity gowns; and 5) nursing instructions during prenatal and postpartum. The completion rate was raised from 62% to 98% after the implementation, which indicated that the solutions proposed in the project was effective. We wish the success of the project would continue to increase the completion rate of early postpartum skin-to-skin contact, which in turn increase the rate of breastfeeding.
