Cancer survivors often face the persistent physiological consequences and psychological impacts of cancer and related treatment, as well as the threat of cancer recurrence. Regular exercise can relieve specific side effects caused by cancer treatments and reduce the recurrence risk of certain cancers. Despite these benefits, only one-third of cancer survivors meet the recommendations of the American Cancer Society’s physical activity guidelines for cancer survivors. To serve as a reference for helping cancer survivors establish regular exercise behaviors, this review article shares the exercise guidelines for cancer survivors, the special considerations for exercise training in different survival stages, and the factors influencing regular exercise in cancer survivors. On the whole, cancer survivors at any stage can exercise regularly. Appropriately designed exercise training can help cancer survivors improve their health, physical functions, and quality of life. In addition to following the general principles of adult exercise guidelines, a cancer survivor needs a personalized exercise plan with the assessments and considerations of impacts and limitations resulted from cancer and its treatment. For patients who may find the exercise behavioral change more challenging, theories of health behavior changes can be further applied for establishing and maintaining exercise habits.
