This article presents research findings of a study of the National Literacy Training Program, a program of the National Institute of Adult Education which had its highest point of activities in the late eighties. Literacy always plays a fundamental role in the constitution of the political culture and in the participation of the citizenship in Mexican society. However, there are indications that literacy training modifies the common sense of the learners. Since we cannot discuss in this article the quality of literacy training provided, or the overall pedagogical orientation of the program, it will be difficult to offer a definitive answer on the question of the hidden curriculum of literacy training.
