The relationship between group leaders' self-awareness and group climate and group member outcome was examined in 49 counseling groups. Drawing on Ward, Gruppen and Regehr's (2002) critique of the measurement of self-awareness, accurate self-awareness was defined intraindividually as the congruence between the counselor's relative awareness of her/his counseling strengths and weaknesses and her/his group members' ratings of her/his strengths and weaknesses. Accurate self-awareness, defined as congruence between group leader and group member ratings, significantly predicted an increasing engaged and a decreasing avoidant group climate. In addition, accurate self-awareness was related to group member-rated benefit from counseling.
