The current study deals with the chronicles and the characters described by Li Sangying (李商隱) (812-858 B.C.), a poet at the end of the Tang Dynasty, in his poems such as West Pavilion, Night Coldness, and Leaving for the Zong Zhang Residence in the Purple Roses (臨發崇讓宅紫薇). According to the literary criticisms of He Zhau (何焯), Cheng Men-xing (程夢星), Su Shu-ku (徐樹穀) , etc., of the Ching Dynasty, Li Sangying wrote his West Pavilion, Night Coldness, and Leaving for the Zong Zhang Residence in the Purple Roses (臨發崇讓宅紫薇) to mourn his deceased wife, Wang, but they were not related to her chronicle. However, Feng Hau (馮浩) considered that Wang, Li Sang-ying’s wife, died in the 5th Year of Tazhung (大中) (851 B.C.) and was accordingly chronicled, and he maintained that this poem was written in memory of his deceased wife in the 6th Year of Tazhung (852B.C.) to express his gratitude to Liu Zhungying (柳仲郢) and pay respect to him when Li stayed overnight at Loyang at his father-in-law, Wang Maouyuan’s (王茂元) Zong Zhang Residence (崇讓宅). Chang Ertien (張爾田) contended that in the 10th Year of Tazhung (856 B.C), Li Sang-ying felt sad at the sorrowful scene and wrote the poem when he stayed at his father-in-law’s residence in Loyang (洛陽) after he returned to Beijing from Tsimu (梓幕). Contemporary scholars, such as Lu Xiuekai and Yu Shucheng (余恕誠) have agreed with Feng Hau, and asserted that the poems were likely to have been written in the 5th Year of Tazhung (大中) after Li’s wife had passed away, and Li was depressed on his way back from Changan (長安) to Loyang to deal with trivial matters. Based on the literary criticisms above, the current study deals with the time of the death of Li Sang-ying’s wife, the possibility of his traveling to Loyang to pay homage to Liu Zhungying (柳仲郢) or his being at Wang Maoyuan’s residence and the probability of his management of his wife’s funeral and some trivial matters. Finally, the current study reaches the conclusion that the chronicles and the places Li Sangying mentioned in poems such as Western Pavilion should have occurred in the winter of the 5th Year of Hueichang (會昌) (845 B.C.) while observing three years mourning before going to Beijing from Chenzho (鄭州) via Loyang. It happened to be the Mid-August Festival, and he wrote the poems while staying at the West Pavilion, Wang Maouyuan (王茂元) and feeling sorrowful over the heart-breaking scenes of the continual deaths of his relations, of rather than his wife. |
