Lee Chi-Leung, an essayist from Hong Kong, writes about depression-the epidemic of the epoch-in his The Room. In this collection of essays, Lee also attempts to process his tangled feelings for Hong Kong. The Room exemplifies what this essay terms ”the writing of autoimmunity.” Simply put, the writing of autoimmunity displays its critical force by pitting itself against the society wherefrom it rises. In The Room, Lee explains how depression is constructed by various medical practices and pharmaceutical discourses to be a certain malady that threatens the well-beingness of the society. When a person is diagnosed with depression, s/he is immediately place in a state of exception, a position outside normalcy. Through the ever-changing perspective of a patient of depression, this essay considers the meaning of normalcy and exception, and how normalcy depends on exception for legitimation. |
