Urban renewal has caused many changes in Hong Kong's urban landscape in the past two decades. Many old districts have been re-developed into middle-class residences or high-end shopping malls with luxury stores. Post-1997 Hong Kong Young Writers such as Lee Wai-yi, Ho Lok, Cheung Yuen-man, and others, who have lived in Hong Kong for a long time, have witnessed the reshaping of the urban space, which has resulted in the disappearance of the old district culture. These writers felt melancholy and expressed their feelings through novels. This article focuses on an aspect rarely mentioned by academics in the novels written by Post-1997 Hong Kong Young Writers-i.e., how urban renewal causes the emotional break between people and place, which causes "placelessness". This article uses the psychology of place to analyze how the novels of post-1997 Hong Kong young writers show the emotional connection between people and place. It also analyzes how writers pay attention to the inner feelings of the residents who lived in the old districts that have been forced to move and try to make readers understand that residents are being driven out of their homes. When residents are forced to move, it can negatively affect their mental health. The article will also point out how urban renewal has destroyed buildings and the culture of the old districts, as well as how Post-1997 Hong Kong Young Writers worry about the loss of characteristics in various districts in Hong Kong. Finally, the common concerns of Lee Wai-yi, Ho Lok, and Cheung Yuen-man will be discussed, that is, through their novels that show personal resistance to capital-driven urban developments, hoping that future urban development can respect Hong Kong's existing history and culture, in order to express the writer's "topophilia" for this city.
