This article focuses on Ocean Literature (1972-1980), the most prominent leftist literary magazine in Hong Kong during the 1970s. It examines the magazine's translation and introduction of Latin American literature and analyzes the relationship between its ideology and translation strategies. This article begins by exploring the translation of Latin American literature in Hong Kong from the 1950s to the 1970s and its connection with China's translation strategies during that period. It then delves into the translation of Latin American literature in Ocean Literature, with a particular focus on Du Jian, the magazine's most important translator. Four influential Latin American writers, predating and during the "Boom" period, are selected as case studies: Mariano Azuela (1873-1952), Juan Rulfo (1917-1986), Miguel Ángel Asturias (1899-1974), and Julio Cortázar (1914-1984). The paper analyzes how ideology influenced the domestication and homogenization of translations, and how the translator's interest in new experimental forms surpassed the politicized framework of leftist translation, revealing a literary brilliance that could not be fully constrained by ideology.
