Medical writing is a highly specialized genre in Taiwanese literature, with physicians as its main authors. By depicting their clinical medical experiences, these writers have transmitted the humanistic spirit. Abu, whose real name is Liu Junhao, graduated from the Department of Medicine at Chang Gung University, is a highly regarded physician writer among the new generation of writers in Taiwan. He has published three collections of essays dealing with medical themes: "The Interns" (2013), "Twilight from Heaven: My Medical Practice in Swaziland" (2013), and "A Crack in Everything" (2021). Abu's essays are filled with passion and compassion, encompassing both ancient medical knowledge and the surreal imaginations like those found in fantasy literature, as well as rational reflection on psychiatry. His medical writing is connected with peculiar occult metaphors, and unfolds a humanistic spirit via the contemplation upon life and reflections upon modern medicine, which give his writing a touch of re-enchantment. Starting from the often used occult metaphors by Abu, this article explores how he thinks about the history and meaning of medicine, and then engages in self-reflection on medical practice. This article also demonstrates the way he, through empathy towards and compassion for the beings in life, contemplates upon the inscriptions made by the sufferings of illness on the human subjects, and develops a human-oriented humanistic concern and discourses on the nature of medicine. Finally, the value of Abu's prose in contemporary medical writing in Taiwan is discussed.
