Jiaxi Yu was well versed in historical studies and completed Commentaries on Shishou Xinyu. His study was characterized by a rigorous and objective approach. Meanwhile, it was also affected by traditional Sueng intellectualism, which emphasized a distinction between altruism and self-centeredness and stresseed the significance of virtues. In his concern about his country out of patriotism, his work projects his subjectivity and his care for the epoch. Nevertheless, there is no specialized study on Yu's historical approach adopted in his commentaries on Shishou Xinyu.
In view of this, this article attempts to address three particular aspects: diminishing social customs and inappropriate consequences, mismanaged awards and false evaluation, and unknown sources and misplaced integrity. In so doing, this paper aims at synthesizing and categorize Yu's scattered, fragmentary and abundant commentaries. Through a careful analysis of the commentaries, this study will show how the three aspects unfold and are exemplified in his commentaries. Meanwhile, it will bring to light Yu's moral stance and nationalism. It is hoped that this article will lay a foundation on which further studies on Commentaries on Shishou Xinyu can be based.
