This study examines and evaluates the effects of three different types of turmeric colorants on damaged hair and white hair. Turmeric powder was mixed with water, 1,3-Butanediol, and 1% gallic acid as mordant to make up the three colorants. In the test on damaged hair, Colorant A, which is turmeric mixed with water, gave the hair a CIE L* value of 58.6±0.5 after 8 washes. Colorant B (turmeric mixed with water, with 1% gallic acid added as mordant) yielded a CIE L* value of 53.1±0.6, and Colorant C (turmeric mixed with water and 1,3-Butanediol, with 1% gallic acid added as mordant) returned a CIE L* value of 42.3±0.1. The CIE L* value of Colorant A is significantly different (P>0.05) from the CIE L* values of Colorant B and C. In the test on white hair, after 6 washes, Colorant C1 (turmeric mixed with water) returned a CIE L* value of 77.0±1.3, Colorant C2 (turmeric mixed with 1,3-Butanediol) returned a CIE L* value of 73.9±0.7, and Colorant C3 (turmeric mixed with 1,3-Butanediol and pectinase) returned a CIE L* value of 72.4±0.4. The CIE L* value of Colorant C1 is significantly higher (P>0.05) than the CIE L* values of Colorant C2 and C3. The CIE b* value for C1, C2, and C3 after 6 washes was 54.3±1.2, 60.3±2.0 and 60.5±1.3 respectively. These test results show that the combination of turmeric and 1,3-Butanediol can help the suffusion of yellow pigments through hair while gallic acid as mordant can help retain the color and lengthen the duration of the dye. The study thus shows that turmeric can be used as an ingredient for semi-permanent hair dye products.
