本文嘗試審思的問題是,如何將通識教育視為是公民教育。作者的理解路徑從歐洲教育理念在古希臘時代的源起切入。然而,這裡所要切中的不是歷史事件,而是事理本質。本質上,人的教育不是專長教育,而是通識教育,也就是公民教育,目的在於培育適於公共生活的優質公民,以體現人的群聚本性。人的群性與人生來便會言語並非兩個各自獨立卻偶然的相遇,而是一種本質事理相互交織的現象。前者可在後者的現象中獲得揭示。我們進而獲得的現象揭示是,從人是群性與人會言語的相互交織中透視出言論自由與思想自由的面向,亦即是優質公民透過通識教育應當被陶冶具備的特質,以滿足人的群性本質,達到和諧共生的存在目的。

英文摘要

This essay aims to examine general education as civic education. The approach is taken from the philosophical beginning of European education in ancient Greece. However, this approach is not historical, but substantial. Substantially, human education is not any kind of professional education, but a way of civic education which aims at cultivating qualified citizens for public life in society. Human's sociability and human's speech are not two independent things which meet each other occasionally. Substantially, it is a phenomenon interweaved by both. The former one could even be revealed in the latter one. Furthermore, we would conclude that human's sociability and human's speech are interweaved to give insight to freedom of speech and freedom of thought, and the characteristics of qualified citizens are cultivated through general education in order to achieve the purpose of harmonious living in human society.
