The article contends that Emily in The Mysteries of Udolpho becomes an economic individual through the removal of certain types of inappropriate sentiments and behaviors that fail to meet the requirements of rationality and propriety. Radcliffe displays two kinds of figures to illustrate these improper sentiments-the feminized, sentimentalized, and overindulgent old man and the imperious widow who owns properties- to figure out the novel's temporal representations. Through elimination of these two kinds of feelings and sentiments, which respectively represents a nostalgic past and an economic present, the protagonist Emily epitomizes the novel's new moral center where economic stability, propriety, and paragons of virtue are united.
