Prominent Taiwanese dramatist Hugh. K.S. Lee(李國修) begins the play The Half-Mile Great Wall(《半里長城》), the first part of Ping Feng Acting Troupe's(屏風表演班) Feng Ping series(風屏劇團系列), with a third-rate acting troupe named Feng Ping performing another play entitled Great Wall of China(《萬里長城》). Lee deploys the frame play to mock and ridicule historical figures or to dismiss the significance of historical events in order to evoke in the audience the feeling of absurdity. He further draws the past into a critique of the present, creating an inter- referentiality between historical figures, including Lü Buwei(呂不韋) and Lao Ai(嫪毐), and members of Feng Ping Troupe, one which highlights human values transcending the boundaries of time and space. Although his use of irony and mockery in the play conveys allegorical significance, it does not leave the audience with a heavy heart. Alluding to and mocking human nature from a broader perspective, the play invites the amused audience to reflect rather than pity. An analysis of The Half-Mile Great Wall sheds light on the creative intention and historical interpretations of Lee during his early career and the ironic effects of the play. |
