During the late Qing and early Republican periods, translations of Western detective novels became popular in China. The reasons for these novels' popularity and how they inspired Chinese writers to create their own stories have attracted interest from numerous scholars. However, except for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous Sherlock Holmes stories and its parody, little research has taken place on other notable translations and writers of the time. Novelist Lu Danan 陸澹盫 (1894-1980), who also worked as a translator, professor, filmmaker, editor, is one such individual who deserves more attention. After publishing several film novels translated and adopted from American film melodrama, such as Dushou 毒 手 (The Hidden Hand ), Heiyidao 黑衣盜 (The House of Hate), and HongShoutao 紅手套 (The Red Glove), Lu created his own beloved detective novels Lifei tananji 李飛探案集 (The Cases of Lifei ). After that, Lu entered the nascent film industry in China and participated in several filmmaking projects. Lu Danan's literary endeavors, namely, translation, writing, and making movies, related to several issues, such as the fusion of different languages, genres, and cultures, the transformation and interaction between literature and cinema, and the dialog between Chinese and Western literary traditions and cultural values. Through comparisons and close examination, this paper discusses the characteristics of Lu Danan's detective film novels. The paper also explores the connotations of Lu Danan's transcultural practice, including his translation, adaptation, and writing, to illustrate how his works represent a modern Chinese writer who continues to cross the gap between new and old, modern and traditional, during a historical period of significant transition.
