國際智能障礙科學研究學會(International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual Disabilities, IASSID)是國際間研究智能障礙最有組織與最權威的學會。第十二屆「國際智能障礙科學研究學會」世界論壇(12(上標 th)IASSID World Congress)在西元2004年6月14-19日於法國蒙特波利爾市(Montpellier, France)舉行，大會的主題為『邁向彼此了解－智能障礙者、環境與社區(Towards Mutual Understanding: Person, Environment, community)』，此次學術會議強調拓展學者專家、實務工作者、智能障礙者與其家屬對智能障礙領域科學知識之廣度與研究方法的發展。本文主要目的乃針對此會議主要論文發表做一趨勢歸納，探討國際間智能障礙科學研究的主要議題，尤其分析國際間對智能障礙定義之修訂、基因科技對身心障礙之影響、身心障礙與醫療衛生之發展，最後探討智能障礙科學研究之限制與未來的研究發展。智能障礙不僅是單純的醫療照護及社會課題，它牽涉到許多不同的學科與部門，歸納世界各國的研究發展經驗與趨勢，有助於研擬適合國內的研究發展策略，提供合適的照護服務，才能有效的滿足智能障礙者的需求，進而提昇其生活品質。

The 12(superscript th) IASSID World Congress was held on June 14-19, 2004 in Montpellier, France. The main theme of this conference was 'Towards Mutual Understanding: Person, Environment, Community'. It highlighted scientific knowledge and methods across the breadth of issues which concerns many perspectives including scientists, practitioners, family members and people with intellectual disabilities. The IASSID is an international and interdisciplinary scientific non governmental organization with official relations with the World Health Organization. It promotes worldwide research and exchange of information on intellectual disabilities. The present paper aims are to examine the implications of the main themes and developmental trends of the 12(superscript th) IASSID World Congress on the field of intellectual disability in the world. The information of this Congress will bring a valued reference to Taiwan in the field of intellectual disability on the development of academic research and service planning.
