Background: To understand the patient safety attitudes of staffs in the Departments of Pharmacy so as to explore factors that may influence staffs' attitude toward patient safety.Methods: The Safety Attitudes Questionnaire (SAQ) was used in this cross-sectional survey to assess patient safety attitude of 104 employees comprising pharmacists, assistants, and other personnel at the pharmacy departments. The survey assessed safety culture across six dimensions: teamwork climate, safety climate, stress recognition, perception of management, working condition, and job satisfaction. Dimension scores were compared by gender, age, branch, work unit, position, managerial job, and work experience groupings using t-test and ANOVA. Multivariate regression model was used to investigate the factors that may affect the patient safety attitude.Results: There were 104 participants wit a response rate of 88%. Most of the participants worked at outpatient or inpatient unit from one branch of this medical system, age ranged from 20 to 40 years old with work experience of 1-5 years. Participants had the highest score in stress recognition (74.8±9.9) and the lowest score in perception of management (67.2±15.5). Participants with managerial job and pharmacist staffs had higher scores in all dimensions. The multivariate regression models showed that persons with work experience over 15 years had statistical significant impacts on all dimensions except teamwork climate, while managerial job had statistical significant impacts on working condition, safety climate, teamwork climate, and job satisfaction. After adjusted for covariates, teamwork climate and perception of management were shown correlating with safety climate, working condition and job satisfaction. The results might allow benchmarking among other departments in this Healthcare System as well as Pharmacy Department at other Healthcare Organizations to find the strength and weakness of the department.Conclusions: This study provided baseline information as well as differences in patient safety attitude of staffs in department of pharmacy. These findings highlighted targets of quality improvement and patient safety education in the future. Safety perception will be further instilled into everyday healthcare service.
