Background & Prupose: The WHOQOL-BREF Taiwan version questionnaire was used to assess the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) including physical, psychological, social, environmental domains for disabled elders. Methods: The questionnaire contains 28 items related to physical, psychological, social, and environmental domains, as well as general health (G1, G2) and a rating scale for total quality of life (Total QOL). Data were collected during a disability assessment process of the elderly at a local hospital and analyzed with SPSS11.0. Results: Sixty-eight elderly people completed the questionnaire from September 2005 to March 2006, including of 31 males and 37 females with a mean age of 78.4 years (SD=7.3). The subjects were suffering from a mean of 2.1±0.8 chronic diseases and had a score for the physical, psychological, social and environmental domains of 8.23±2.46, 8.35±2.70, 9.76±3.22 and 10.46±2.71, respectively. The scores for the two general items (G1, G2) were 8.94±4.21 and 7.65±3.44, respectively. The mean score for the total QOL (score 0-100) was 52.30±26.36. The subjects were suffering from serious (n=28), moderate (n=25), mild (n=15) limbs disability, and had mean score for the total QOL 33.70±22.37, 63.26±21.25, 64.00±23.85, respectively. The psychological, social and environmental domains and the total QOL of disabled elders with serious grade were significant lower than moderate and mild grade. The social domain was found to be a significant predictor for total QOL in our study. Conclusion: This study had attempted to appraise the disabled grade relating to the physical, psychological, social and environmental domains of the elderly. Further comparisons of QOL and the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health among the elderly are needed in order to develop disability assessment schemes in Taiwan. |
