The paper aims to explore the sociological meaning lying behind the choices of alcoholic beverages and tea made by middle-class Taiwanese women. Analyses based upon data collected by means of qualitative questionnaires and from focus groups seem to indicate that, since qualities associated with alcoholic beverages may involve health concerns, danger, and hedonistic pleasure, middle-class women may adopt cautious and conservative attitudes towards alcoholic beverages, which reflect their corresponding gender self-images. In contrast, tea beverages are more readily available in the working environment and the daily interpersonal contacts of middle-class women, which means that it is easier for these women to demonstrate their personal tastes and distinctive characteristics by opting for one type of tea or another. For middle-class women, choices of alcoholic or tea beverages are made with concerns of more than simply personal likes and dislikes; such choices also help present a personality distinct from the rest of society. |
