The family members of terminal cancer patients often experience physical and psychological burden, struggling between the values as a caregiver and a person. The present study provides an example of an 18-year-old teenage boy, who faced a dilemma between his dying father and his personal life. The long-term caring work has burned out his time and values, and woke him sense that those works were meaningless as no improvement to be seen on his father’s daily function. Thus he had not only experienced physically and psychological symptoms but expressed his wishes of running away from the bedside to anywhere else. Regarding to these struggles of caregiver, we propose that practitioners use existential perspective to help caregiver construct a new meaning of freedom and cope better with the current situation. |
