Purpose: In the past ten years, animal assisted therapy has shown diversified development in Taiwan. Our unit is the first to use Guide Dogs as assisted therapy dogs for caring terminally ill patients. This survey found the assisted therapy dog service completion rate was only 12% from January to March 2018. Methods: After analyzing the questionnaire and interview, we found the reasons for low completion rate included: (1) lack of clear referral and execution process;(2) lack of relevant information for patients to understand the benefits of assisted therapy dog service;(3) lack of knowledge with special characteristics of the Guide Dogs and how to interact with them;(4) lack of the shift or recording of the participation of patients or family members in activities. Results: After the survey, we develop an assisted therapy dog service process and infection control standard and operating norms, education and so on. We improved the complete rate of animal assisted therapy to 93%. Regarding to perspectives of Patients and Family, 90% felt peace and warmth in mind, 87% released stress and 83% had a chance to conduct life review; 80% of medical team members believed that animal-assisted therapy can improve work motivation and promote teamwork cohesion. Conclusion: The meaning of animals to humans is more than companionship or support. The therapy animal can heal the patient's physiology and psychology through close interaction with people. We hope to extend the positive experience of animal-assisted therapy to other hospitals, and to provide a basis for designing evidence-based nursing research efforts. |
