1878年（昭和十一年）美籍教師雷朗德博士（G、A、Leland）把網球器材帶進日本，為網球在日本發展的開始，1890年「三田土」橡皮公司開始製造軟式網球。軟式網球運動自1907年引進臺灣，發展已超過百年，經歷了三個階段：第一階段1907-1944年，為啟蒙期。第二階段1945-1954年，為推廣期。第三階段1955年起，為走向國際期。軟式網球發展歷史給我們如下啟示：不分男女、老少人人可參與的運動深受民眾喜愛；發展超過百年是優勢競技專案；其發展原因是推動人士的努力宣導、及全體運動員積極參與和學校社會的支持。
