Qian Zhongshu used to satirize the ambassadors of the Late Qing dynasty for their theatergoing as only "feasting their eyes" without any "sense of literature, a comment that generates a far-reaching influence on the researches of Chinese reception of Western drama and theatre, albeit seriously misleading. In fact, the dramas these ambassadors saw in the West were the mainstream productions of the nineteenth-century Europe, neither appropriately comparable to Ibsenian plays, nor exclusively calibrated by established idea of "literature". Looking at the travel diary of Zhang Deyi, reputed with the longest ambassadorship in Europe, this paper aims to investigate the history of the English theater in the Victorian era recorded in his diary and reshape this initial phase of the history of the cultural exchange between China and the West from the perspective of "theatre" rather than the literature-oriented "drama". The goal of this research is twofold: with reference to the original materials, both Chinese and English, this research expects to restore to Chinese readers the general picture of performances and productions of the Victorian theatre. In addition, the high level of the Late Qing ambassadors' reception of Western theatre is virtually inconceivable to Qian Zhongshu's proud comment.
