To shift focus from exercise to physical activity for health gain is global concern by health professionals. Exercise, medical clinical and epidemiological studies need a parsimonious scale to measure the benefits of and barriers to physical activity. Purpose: We are going to develop and verify a concise scale related to the benefits of and barriers to physical activity and the scale would be linguistically and culturally appropriate to Taiwanese. The second aim as report the most important items of the culture-specific scale in Taiwan. Methods: A comprehensive process was used to develop the Concise Scale of Benefits/Barriers of Physical Activity (CSBBPA) for Taiwanese. A systemic review of 51 literatures, interviews 6 persons, dual-translation, field testing, discussion with 23 experts, and preliminary testing among 101 cases for item analysis to decrease the item number in development phase. In verification phase: a quantitative survey was carried out in a computer manufacturing company in 184 cases. Results: Through face validity examination, extracted benefit/barrier items to produce two brief 7-items to form the CSBBPA. The two 7-items CSBBPA had acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = .838; .796). The CSBBPA showed an acceptable internal consistence (Intra-Classification Correlation =.809; .803), even though it was only made up of seven items and four response levels. The CSBBPA was able to accurately discriminate an active lifestyle, the subject's participation in and energy expenditure on physical activity, and to predict obesity. The main benefit of physical activity was identified as health enhancement. Lack of instruction and companionship was the commonly perceived barrier in Taiwan. Conclusions: This efficient tool allows the health providers to assess whether there should be intervention for Chinese clients in terms of physical activity and this will result in the promotion of an active lifestyle.
