本文討論國際關係中的批判理論之來源與演展。國際批判理論的前身爲法蘭克福學派的批判理論，該理論受德國觀念論、人本主義、和馬克思唯物史觀的影響。批評論者不但批評資本主義，也批判教條的馬克思主義生冷僵硬之意識形態。哈伯瑪斯回答實證主義者質疑批判理論未提供建設性的理論，以解決人類的難題。哈氏認爲應同時重視勞動與互動（溝通）兩者，這也爲審議民主的出現埋下伏筆。普世的溝通社群之出現在當代益形重要。當代學界反思國際關係理論，拋棄實證主義的思路，而以本體論、認知論重加建構。由於知識、利益和權力掛鉤，在政治社群方面便產生不平與宰制。現代國家背離民胞物與的精神，資本主義更爲資產階級發聲；其主權治理與壟斷權力，爲政府機器與市民社會之合構反映其霸權社會秩序；然博愛精神、大同主義與論述倫理爲重建國際關係，使其走上解放之途的鑰匙。重建政治社群、發揚世界公民權、推動永久和平、重思文明化過程、尋求人類解放，爲未來的發展目標。

Critical theory is a new trend in the study of international relations (IR) arising in the 1980s. It aims at criticizing the so-called rationalism and positivism and its derivative schools of thought, namely neoliberalism and neorealism. This article traces the origins of critical theory in Kant's and Marx's philosophical ideas, especially the critical sociology of the Frankfurt School, and Habermas' theory of communicative action and discursive ethics. The essay then discusses the application of critical theory on world politics and global economy. It elaborates on the critiques of Cox, Ashley and Linklater of the mainstream IR theories and expatiates upon their views on the importance of political community, particularly the ethical, sociological and practical dimensions. Finally, the treatise raises some issues and problems of this new trend of theory and its responses and deals with its possible further development.
