The authors review the literature on traditional and recent approaches to intercultural competence and its development, answering the following questions: What is intercultural competence? How is culture defined in intercultural competence research? How can intercultural competence be developed in organizations? Different models of intercultural competence are linked to their underlying understanding of culture. The most common operationalization of culture as a homogeneous, stable (national) variable and its shortcomings are discussed in terms of culture-general and culture-specific models of intercultural competence. The authors present new insights into two recent reflections on culture: culture as a process, as a multilevel variable, and culture as a fuzzy concept. A framework for the development of intercultural competence in organizations is provided.
