The paper aims to shed light on antecedents of career success. According to the perspective of self-fulfilling prophecy, employees are outcome dependent but uncertain about the outcomes and thus are likely to engage in the process of self-fulfilling prophecy (i.e., expectation, attribution, and action) to gain some degree of control and prediction. In this study, we argue that cynicism has destructive self-fulfilling effects and that the need for leadership has productive self-fulfilling effects on career success. Thus, we present and test a path model that focuses on the mediating role of cynicism in the relationship between the value-percept discrepancies and career success and, moreover, the moderating role of the need for leadership in the relationships between value-percept discrepancies and cynicism and cynicism and career success. The results show that the relationship between the value-percept discrepancies and career success is in part mediated by employee cynicism. In addition, the need for leadership has main effects on employee cynicism and career success, but only moderates the relationship between the value-percept discrepancy and employee cynicism.
