This essay aims to discuss the integration process of baseball and Japanese bushido culture and the origin of the ”Bushido Yakyu” (Japanese style baseball) after the Meiji Times (A.D. 1868-A.D. 1912). The ”Ichiko Times” (the Tokyo First High School, Tokyo Dai Ichi Gakko, hereafter Ichiko) was taken as the study object. Some discoveries showed, that in the begining of Meiji Times baseball spread rapidly among schools with the ongoing adaption and extention of education system by the government after analyzing the historical materials. However at that time baseball only presented the type of American recreational sport. Tokyo First High School was established at that time, and became the highest institution under the old system. Kinoshita Hiroji, the president of the Ichiko, in order to arouse students' spirit of bushido took the stadiums as the pre-modern dojo for Martial arts, and required them to obey the etiquette in Martial arts dojo. The school baseball team adopted the idea of Kinoshida, and changed their sportsmanship from recreation to the spiritual cultivation after the school campus being moved from Hitotsubashi to Hongo. The main causes are as follows: firstly, after the continuing establishment of baseball stadiums, student autonomous domitories and sports departments, the baseball team was regarded as the representation of school spirit. Secondly, after the competition with the Meiji Gakuin (a Christian school), the character was changed from playing baseball to training the baseball (including the essencial element of spiritual cultivation) when Ichiko admitted the defeat of the games. From then on, the baseball team trained under the guide of mentalism. Thirdly, Chuma Kanoe claimed that the baseball also has the effect of spirtual cultivation in the Journal of alumni association during the period of argument between Kendo (domestic culture) and baseball (foreign culture). Forthly, after they defeated the Yokohama Amateur Club (an American team) successfully, they not only laid the foundation of the following Ichiko Times, but also built the ideology of Japanes Yakyu based on the bushido spirit. |
