The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of double stigmatization of the deceased on their family. Since the society doesn't give the bereaved the right to grieve, some of their grief reactions were not be understood and supported by the public. Owing to the uniqueness of the target population in this study, the research data were obtained from three female college students whose relatives suffering from mental illness committed suicide. Qualitative analyses were made to trace back their experience and also interpret the content. The results of this study identified four specific grief reactions. Firstly, the elder members of family felt shocked and confused, avoiding explanation for suicide their beloved ones committed when asked. Secondly, when the news on suicide of the deceased was known by others, their family members tended to hide the fact that the deceased were suffering from depression. Thirdly, they ended up under great pressure of being the talk of the town. Fourthly, because of suicide, special funeral rituals were performed in the hope of comforting the dead and the alive. Meaning of the relationship of this kind of grief experience and adjustment to grief included: (a) stigma of suicide remains, but the family still care about each other by recognizing the value of life; (b) empathizing with the deceased and their pain of depression, rather than blaming; (c) mourning for the deceased family members in order to remove the stigma of suicide and depression. Based on these findings, this study suggests that practitioners of helping profession should take heed of the influence of stigmatization on the family of the deceased and also of more challenging difficulty from the hidden stigmatized identity of the deceased. In addition, practitioners are also suggested to offer family of the deceased professional assistance to break away from stigmatized stereotype in order to smooth their grief away. |
