Diabolo juggling has always been an eye-catching performance and was often awarded high points in competitions. The difficulty of performing the diabolo juggling increases with the number of diabolo juggled. Therefore, beginners usually start from learning to juggle one diabolo then increasing the number of diabolo after acquiring the single diabolo juggling skill. However, little was known about the difference in movement between different numbers of diabolo juggled, as well as the reason why learning to juggle fewer diabolos would help to learn to juggle more diabolos. The purpose of the study was to investigate the movement characteristics of 3 kinds of diabolo juggling patterns: single diabolo around-the-foot orbits, double diabolo around-the-foot orbits, and double diabolo juggling. There were 8 eighth graders who had at least one year's experience in diabolo spinning participated in the study. All the participants performed 3 diabolo juggling tasks in the following sequence: double diabolo juggling, single diabolo around-the-foot orbits, and double diabolo around-the-foot orbits. A high speed video camera was used to video tape the frontal view of the juggling movement, and the Kwon3D digitizing system was used to capture the kinematics of the left and right sticks and the center of the diabolo. One way, two way repeated measure ANOVA, and the Chi-Square test were used for statistical analyses. The results showed that the movement period, the relative phase of the two sticks (hands), air time of the diabolo, and the relative phase of the stick and the diabolo had significant differences among the 3 kinds of juggling pattern. In conclusion, the number of diabolo juggled, not only affects the period and frequency of the bimanual movement, but also influences the timing between the diabolo and hand-stick movement. Future study will examine the movement characteristics of juggling 3 and more diabolos in order to better understand the relation between the number of diabolo and the movement characteristics in diabolo juggling.
