Although needle puncture in nurses is not life-threatening, it such incident will deliver a great amount of stress, panic, mental burden, and additional medical costs. Retrospective study showed that the incident rate of needle puncture was 18.2% in the second quarter of 2015. The main reasons are: (1) the nurses did not perform needling according to standard procedure, (2) the inadequate audit system, and (3) the inadequate training system. After reviewing different ways of improvement, the followings were implemented: scheduled training in standardized needling procedure, structure standardized risk assessment and auditing forms, improve safety equipment, audit trainees, use entirely safety needles, and produce and promote spiritual printings and markers. The results from these implementations presented a decrease in needle puncture incident rate from 18.2% to 0%, which not only over achieved the targeted result but also effectively improved workplace safety for nurses and reduce medical costs. |
