Purpose: This study was intended to investigate canoe sprint athletes' training pattern and participation profile. Method: Two hundred and three canoe sprint athletes (158 males and 45 females) participating in the 2010 National High School Athletic Games were selected to take part in this study. Data were gathered using questionnaires and the statistical technique involved descriptive statistics. Results: First of all, athletes acquired canoe sprint related information from coaches (45.3%) and school teachers (29.1%). The most prominent motive to participate in canoe sprint was pursuing higher levels of education (60%). Secondly, approximately 60% of the athletes had engaged in other sports longer than six months prior to canoe sprint; the top three categories were swimming (18.3%), track and field (11.9%), and basketball (9.4%). Thirdly, the average training session for the Games was 1 year and 7 months and the endurance (one month before the Games) was 3.3 hours per session and 8.9 times per week; 32.7% of the athletes reported very tired after the training session. Lastly, 44.8% of the athletes responded they had fun while participating in canoe sprint and 67% reported they are willing to engage in canoe sprint as athletes (47.3%) and coaches (32%) in the future. Conclusions: Based on the results, the researchers suggested the accreditation association should host more activities in order to enhance visibility and encourage participation in canoe sprint. In addition, coaches should utilize more diverse coaching methods and adapt more effective recruitment strategies so as to enhance athletes' intrinsic motivation and their sport commitment for further participation and training.
