Background: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of self-efficacy in using health behaviors would mediate the negative impacts of physical and psychological problems on mental health status in community middle-aged people. Method: This is a cross-sectional study which recruited 250 middle-aged (M=45, SD=8.5 years) people from the family medicine outpatient clinic in a medical center. Information was collected by structured questionnaire interviews, and was analyzed using hierarchical multiple regression applying SPSS 17.0 to have the data analyzed. Results: Our results showed that one's age, education level, chronic diseases, health problems, and life stress were associated with the mental health status in middle-aged people. Among those factors, age and education level could interpret 6.0% (p <0.001) of the variance in their mental health status. Age, education level, the severe level of chronic diseases or health problems, life stress, and other variables could predict 29.5% of the variance (p <0.001) in their mental health status. However, self-efficacy in health behavior could mediate the negative impacts of physical health problems and life stress on mental health status; as well as to increase the explanation of 11.0% (p <0.001) of the variance on mental health impact. Conclusion: Our study showed that middle-aged people who using the self-efficacy in health behavior were more able to mediate the negative influences on mental health status associated with physical health problems and life stress and would have a better mental health status. Self-efficacy in health behaviors is an important factor to enhance general health conditions in middle-aged people. Health care professionals should focus more on developing measures or policies to enhance self-efficacy in health behaviors for middle-aged people in order to improve their mental health conditions. |
