The ethnic Chinese culture places great emphasis on family values pertaining to family interactions (Garcia, Mendez, Ellis, & Gautney, 2014). The family caregivers of patients with mental illness play an essential role in the process of their recovery. Wu and Ching (2020) conducted qualitative interviews to explore how patients with chronic schizophrenia interacted with their family during recovery and observed close interactive relationships of psychiatric patients with their family members in Taiwan. The study also revealed that such family interactions as well as the family's perception of mental illness and treatments can positively or negatively affect patients' adherence with treatment, self-perception, and recovery. This finding corresponds with the cultural context in Taiwan, indicating that to promote the recovery of patients with mental illness, family's perspective on the illness and treatment as well as their support for the patients should be highlighted. Huang and Huang (2020) surveyed the life quality of patients with chronic mental illness hospitalized in eastern Taiwan. They determined that occupational rehabilitation was the primary factor affecting these patients' quality of life. They also observed that patients who had a paid job had highest quality of life. Accordingly, the same study recommended that the government, hospitals, and clinics pay attention to the need of patients with chronic psychiatric conditions for rehabilitation; provide appropriate rehabilitation services; matchmake these patients with job opportunities; and help them return to the community. Three studies on the respective nursing experience of helping a patient with gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid addiction to overcome delirium, helping a female patient who were melancholic due to long-term domestic violence to recover from trauma, and using the interpersonal and social rhythms therapy to treat a patient with bipolar disorder (Hong & Huang, 2020; Hung & Huang, 2020; Tu, Kuo, Chien, Chien, Chou, Hung, 2020) signalize the unique functions of psychiatric health nursing. Since the beginning of fall, typhoons have developed continually, yet none of them have struck Taiwan! Early in the morning today when we were hosting an event titled Recovered Educators, in which several "teachers who have recovered" were invited to share their experience with college students, we were hit unexpectedly by Typhoon Atsani. According to the weather report, the typhoon would pass soon, but the land was likely to be affected by it. We tensed up when we heard the news and prepared ourselves well for the typhoon. Fortunately, the rain became small and eventually stopped when we had outdoor activities. We'd enjoyed the light of cloudy day together, learning to look up to the upcoming sunshine in the sky whenever we encounter an inevitable cloudy day in life. |
