This study investigates the images and graphs of one-foot humans, deities, birds or other animals in ”Shan Hai Jing”. ”Shan Hai Jing” first mentioned ”One Arm Country” and then curiously talked about ”Ji Gong Country” (Ji Gong also means ”One Arm” in Chinese). It makes one wonder the second country should be ”Ji Gu Country” (Ji Gu means ”One Foot” in Chinese) instead. ”Huai-Nan-Zi” listed ”One-Arm People” and ”Ji Gu People” together, while a series of ”World Map” passed down in Korea also put ”One-Arm People” and ”Ji Gu People” side by side. It seems to suggest that in ”Shan Hai Jing” ”Ji Gu Country” was mistaken for ”Ji Gong Conutry”. Moreover, ”One Foot” myth is also found widespread among Yi people in Guizhou. In the myth of Yi people, which belongs to Ancient Zhi-Qiang population, a one-foot wild man is thought as the character of a shaman who leads the souls of the dead back to the ancestors' embrace. It is probably not a coincidence that a Yi myth shares the same ”one foot” image with those cited in ”Shan Hai Jing”. |
